Tending to “piercing bumps” are detrimental to the healing process. Hypertrophic scarring can cause migration/rejection or your piercing to heal at an incorrect angle if not treated.

Irritation vs. Infection
Many times irritation is confused for an infection. How can you tell the difference? For starters, a true infection seldomly happens, but still very possible if a piercing is not taken care of. Signs of infection include redness spreading from the piercing site, very swollen and hot to the touch, or discolored and/or foul smelling secretions . If you have concerns a piercing is infected, do not remove the jewelry. Removing the jewelry may cause the fistula to be exposed to more harmful bacteria and will worsen the infection. See a doctor as soon as possible to be treated with antibiotics.
Irritation is much more common and is often times nothing to worry about. Signs of irritation include swelling and redness relative to the piercing site, white, clear, or pink lymphatic fluid, or a piercing bump. Most irritation goes away on its own, but if symptoms persist then it’s best to book an Aftercare/Follow up appointment to say hello to happy and safe healing!
Importance of Downsizing
Noticing some extra length on your jewelry? It might be time to downsize! A Piercer will typically add some extra length onto your initial jewelry when you get pierced so that you can swell up safely and comfortably. However, once that swelling goes down and healing is where it should be, it’s best to switch to something shorter to remain safe. The extra length can get caught on things very easily and set back your overall process of healing.
